Decant Urban Winery Received the First Nico Velo Italian Concrete Tanks in Texas

Posted on September 01, 2018

Decant Urban Winery in Houston, Texas received the first Nico Velo Italian concrete tanks in the state.

"Decant Urban Winery has selected the Nico Velo Tulipe tanks due to the beauty of their design and their technical superiority. By employing concrete tanks, we will produce a higher quality wine on a shorter production cycle. The micro-oxygenation of the wine via the porous concrete results in a more mature product with better mouth feel and a rounder body than alternative methods.

Our initial production will include a collection of whites, rosé, and reds:
• The whites and rosé will include a Sauvignon Blanc, Late Harvest Riesling, Chablis-style Chardonnay, a Burgundian-style Chardonnay, and a Pinot rosé. In order to bring out the unique character of these wines, we have two 12 HL tanks. One of the tanks includes the internal epoxy coating while the second does not have the internal epoxy. The epoxy lining will reduce oxygenation when a crisp wine is the desired outcome such as our Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Chablis-style Chardonnay. The non-epoxied tank will produce our aged white varietals. Both tanks incorporate the integrated glycol chilling circuit within the tanks, which provides Decant the ability to ferment at low temperatures to preserve fruity and floral characteristics of these varieties.

• The reds will be produced in our twin 31 HL tanks and will include Pinot Nouveau, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The tulipe form was selected because of its natural convection characteristics, which will support uniform tannin extraction and distribution. We have also incorporated the glycol chilling circuit in these tanks to help preserve the optimal fermentation temperature. In the Texas heat, the concrete provides Decant an environmental advantage because the large thermal mass of the tanks requires less energy to maintain the tank’s temperature once it has achieved the desired set point.

ITek Wine Inc, Nico Velo’s representatives in North America, were selected due to their exceptional customer service and rapid responses assisting Decant in making this complex decision which is the foundation of our winery. Manu Fiorentini’s knowledge of the Nico Velo advantages helped us tailor our tank selection to our unique production challenges in Houston Texas.

The concrete tank installation in a Houston winery was the first of its kind for TNT Cranes & Rigging. Because of the planning support and ITek’s on-site supervision, the delivery and installation was completed smoothly and safely.

Decant will proudly recommend ITek Wine to all of its colleagues in the Texas wine industry as their products and service offer unique capabilities that can help us produce a world class product."
