The Family Coppola Starts off 2020 with a New Head of Winemaking

Posted on January 06, 2020

Gary Sitton took his first steps on his wine journey in 1996, when he relocated to Sonoma County from Germany after briefly pursuing a career in professional soccer.  The job he took in the local vineyards was intended to help pay the rent while applying for admittance to veterinary school.  Instead, it became the first step in his winemaking career.

After completing his degree, Gary graduated from the cellar to join the Winemaking Team at Ravenswood.  Over the course of the next 20 years, Gary had positions in lead winemaking at Blackstone Winery and later Clos Du Bois Winery, before returning home to Ravenswood.

Today, Gary is thrilled to join The Family Coppola Team as the Vice President of Winemaking, where he will be running winemaking operations for all three wineries: Francis Ford Coppola Winery, Virginia Dare Winery and Domaine DeBroglie in Dundee Hills, OR.

Gary states “What I enjoy most about making wine is the way it brings people together, sharing it at the table, with food, friends and family.  Growing up in my home, no matter how busy we were, we always came together at the table at the end of the day, and for me there is a deep emotional connection there.  In that regard, I feel a great sense of connection to The Family Coppola as many of the wines we make are about sharing the experiences of Francis and his family and encouraging others to create their own.”

Region: Napa & Sonoma
Job Function: Winemaking
