McEvoy Ranch Announces New Winemaker, Byron Kosuge

Posted on October 03, 2017

PRESS RELEASE -- October 3, 2017 -- First, a bittersweet announcement. Blake Yarger has accepted a position at Big Basin Winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Blake began his career at McEvoy Ranch working in the gardens, eventually taking winemaking classes on his own time and learning every aspect of our vineyards and winery as Assistant Winemaker. When he was appointed Winemaker in 2015, he took on the responsibilities of expanding our wine portfolio to include wines sourced from neighboring vineyards and collaborating with our consulting winemaker Maurizio Castelli. Blake upped our game in many ways, and we look forward to following his career. He is a star who will go very far in this business.

Secondly, I’m pleased to announce the appointment of Byron Kosuge as our new winemaker. Byron is a well-respected winemaker specializing in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, having established his reputation with his own B. Kosuge brand. Byron’s thoughtful approach to winemaking fits perfectly with our philosophy at McEvoy Ranch and we are very excited to be working with him. You can learn more about Byron on our website.

Maurizio will continue to work with us, consulting and making wine for us in his beloved Tuscany. For those of you who have met Maurizio, you know what a wonderful person he is and what a tremendous asset he is to McEvoy Ranch.

Finally, with Byron taking over the winemaking reins, starting this harvest we will be making our wines at Paul Sloan’s Small Vines winery in Sebastopol. Paul has been a friend and partner of McEvoy Ranch since the beginning of our wine program, as he and his crew did the original planting of our vines. Paul is putting the finishing touches on his brand new winery and we feel very fortunate to be able to work with him and Byron. Those of you who have visited us know that our winery facility was very small and we have been rapidly outgrowing it. Moving to Small Vines gives us room to grow in an exceptionally well laid out facility. With Byron making his wines there as well, it is an ideal set up for us.

We believe these changes at our winery will allow us to continue to bring you exceptional, terroir-driven wines that meet with your approval. All our tours, tastings, workshops, and events, including our Club Pick-Up Parties, will continue to be held at the Ranch. For McEvoy Club Members who have RSVP’d already, we look forward to seeing you at our upcoming Pick-Up Party where you will have a chance to meet Byron.

Please let us know any questions you may have, and again, we so appreciate your loyalty and support of McEvoy Ranch!
