Wine Market Council named Dale Stratton its new president and announced a strategic new partnership for 2020 research endeavors. Stratton was vice president, commercial insights at Constellation Brands and spent 22 years at E. & J. Gallo. Wine Market Council also announced a new collaboration with Nielsen Global Connect on new a Wine & Wellness study.

At the beginning of the year, winemaker Ali Mayfield joined Wahluke Wine Company as the white wine and Rosé winemaker and ended up reuniting with a former colleague-Kendall Mix, who has served as head winemaker since 2017. Mix, who will remain in charge of the red wine program at the winery, is a former colleague from Mayfield's tenure at Corliss Estates in Walla Walla, Wash. In addition to time spent at Corliss, Mix has worked for several high-profile producers.

Florida Wine Academy announces the dates for VinoSummit, the first conference dedicated to wine professionals in the south eastern United States. The inaugural conference in 2019 was a one-day program that took place at the Biltmore Hotel in south Miami. 'House Bill 1187 would allow Virginia distilleries to take orders over the Internet from Virginia citizens, then ship those spirits via common carrier to residents of the state. It is a good idea. However, the bill does not allow out-of-state distillers to ship spirits to Virginians. In other words, this bill sets up exactly the same kind of discrimination that the Supreme Court ruled in Granholm v Heald to be unconstitutional.'

The language of wine can be intimidating. Wine lovers have our own vocabulary, complete with foreign words that can be difficult to pronounce. We boast of tasting a cornucopia of flavors that seem mystical and obscure to normal drinkers. And we can spot a wine noob if they hold their glass by the bowl instead of the stem, say "RISE-ling" instead of "REEZ-ling," or describe a wine merely as "smooth." Most of us want to share our enthusiasm and love of wine; others, unfortunately, judge.
