The ugly trade war between the United States and the European Union looks like worsening, after US trade authorities suggested increasing tariffs and broadening their scope to take in all wines from the EU. The Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) updated its online registry of tariffs and suggested it could increase the number of products subject to tariffs as well as increasing the tariff rates - rates that could be as high as 100 percent, according to the way the USTR is talking this week

Smoke from Australia's fierce bushfires settled over Sydney in still conditions on Tuesday, setting off fire alarms, and halting ferry services as famous landmarks disappeared behind some of the worst haze seen in the harbor city. Sydney's air quality index readings in some parts of the city on Tuesday were 11 times the threshold considered hazardous, government data showed. The wildfires have blanketed Sydney - home to more than 5 million people and better known for its clear skies and blue harbor - in smoke and ash for more than two weeks.

To gauge the scope and impact of the industry nationwide, farmers throughout the country are being asked to participate in a short survey for a study led by the University of Vermont. The data will be used by cooperative extension and research personnel to develop resources to help increase the success of small- and medium-sized farms that offer on-farm direct sales, education, hospitality, recreation, entertainment and other types of agritourism.
