There is no one-size-fits-all solution to wine marketing. For one thing, I think that few understand that the "wine industry" is not a monolith. That is to say that there isn't a single "wine industry", there are several. Similarly, there isn't just one "wine consumer" or wine market. Wine companies misunderstand this at their peril. This general misunderstanding as to the nature of their own business is probably why I am completely unimpressed by the marketing campaigns, including the product packaging, generally bruited about by most wineries.

Speaking to db during a recent visit to Piedmont, Ilaria Bertini, head of communications for the Barolo and Barbaresco Consorzio, said: "We don't want to be faced with the situation of a glut of wine, so the consorzio has taken the step to stop any new plantings of vines in the Barolo region for the next three years. The new rule will come into place in January 2020 and we will revise the situation in 2023. It is a preventative measure to control the production of Barolo and preserve the landscape. The year's relatively mild and dry winter was met with an early spring, ensuring a normal budding period for the vines, and late spring rain resulted in water reserves useful for maintaining plant health throughout the summer heat. May and the very beginning of June saw cool, humid conditions slightly delaying the growing cycle of the vines - a turn of events paralleling, in fact, the seasonal shifts that created the great vintages of the 1980's.
