For most wine lovers the region of Roussillon brings to mind fortified sweet wines. Located in the far south of France, snuggled next to the Spanish border, Roussillon is often referred to as the "Other French Rivera," and has a similar sunny Mediterranean climate as Provence. This allows the more than 420 wineries and 29 cooperatives that operate in the region to produce a wide variety of wines. However, over the last decade they have begun to focus more on dry wines with a fresh fruit-forward style, while still maintaining the heritage of the ancient fortified sweet wines that were lauded by generations of kings.

David L. King, the patriarch of King Family Vineyards, an advocate and champion of Virginia's wine industry and a supporter of the Albemarle County Sheriff's Office search and rescue team, died May 2 after a long battle with cancer, according to family members. King, 64, planted the original vineyard at the Crozet winery after he and his wife, Ellen, bought their Roseland Farm property outside of Yancey Mills in 1996.

This month, the State of California announced it would ban the use of the pesticide chlorpyrifos. The University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program's Guidelines for Grape provides information on managing individual pests and includes alternatives to chlorpyrifos. Only ants and vine mealybugs are listed in the critical use category for chlorpyrifos, but only until the complete ban takes effect.

The Placer County Planning Commission is scheduled to take public comment Thursday on the environmental impact report on its proposed revision to winery zoning. The public comment period will stay open until June 10, and the new rule could be adopted by the end of the year. The draft ordinance reflects that, increasingly, wineries and farm breweries are looking to hold events and bring customers to the farm to see how product gets made.
