US drinkers are changing their behaviour towards the wine category, the US Portraits 2018 from Wine Intelligence has revealed. It identified six distinct consumer segments in the US market and highlighted that since its last report in 2016 there had been a shift in their behaviours, which has prompted updated segmentation as per below.

During the 16th General Assembly of the OIV in Punta del Este (Uruguay), the 47 Member States of the OIV have elected the next Director General of the OIV for a 5 year mandate from 2019-2023. Pau Roca Blasco (Spain), currently the Secretary General of the Spanish Wine Federation, has been chosen to become the 10th Director of the OIV and to lead the Organisation towards the celebration of its centenary.

Speaking in London this week, Ricardo Aguiriano from the Consejo Regulador DOCa Rioja said that the pressure on supply from Rioja would ease with this year's vintage, which is up from 360 million kilograms of grapes in 2017 to 468m kg this year - an increase of 30%, making it one of the largest harvests of the past decade.

The study shows that as it is with large companies pressured to adopt the practices of their competitors, when SME wineries face stiff competition, sustainable practices helps them do better financially . The international wine industry is fragmented into many SME wine companies, so there isn't much pressure on any one individual winery to adopt the environmental practices of another. Yet, the study shows that because of potential competition always lurking outside the door, lack of competition today shouldn't necessarily prevent wineries from exploring sustainable grape growing and wine production methods.

The 2019 Concours Mondial du Sauvignon will take place on 9 and 10 March. Its organisers have chosen Italy, or more precisely Friuli Venezia Giulia, to host the tenth competition, marking its triumphant return to the region.

Producers wishing to take part have until 1 March to enter and send in their samples. The competition is open to all styles of wine, from sparkling to fortified, as long as they are made with grapes that are certified either organic or biodynamic. An expert panel of judges composed exclusively of Masters of Wine, Master Sommeliers and senior buyers will judge the wines, chaired by db editor-in-chief Patrick Schmitt MW. The wines will be tasted blind and the panel will award the best wines with medals from Bronze through to Gold. 'Master' is reserved for the exceptional and standout wines of the day.
