Wineries Connect with QR Codes in WBM's August Issue

Wineries have started to use these codes on shelf talkers, posters, business cards, advertisements and other materials.
July 27, 2011

The cover story in the August issue of Wine Business Monthly is about QR Codes and how wineries are using them to connect with consumers. These new two-dimensional codes that look like miniature crossword puzzles are joining one-dimensional Universal Product Codes (UPC) on labels, cases and promotional material to allow customers to immediately connect to a winery’s website or marketing system.

Wineries have started to use these codes on shelf talkers, posters, business cards, advertisements and other materials. Some restaurants and bars are adding them to wine lists for more information about the wine.

The QR Code (abbreviated from Quick Response code) is readable by QR barcode reader apps that Smartphone users can download on their phones. The information encoded may be text, URL, or other data. After scanning the code with your Smartphone, you may then hear a message, watch a video or get data on a wine while the winery, in turn, can track the inquiry. Users can even send an email or order products with their phones.

The article talks about how QR Codes are being used in the wine business -- different wineries tell us how they are implementing QR Codes in their wine programs –- and we also give you instructions on how to create QR Codes of your own.

You can read the full article in the August issue of Wine Business Monthly magazine, which will be hitting mailboxes at the beginning of August. If you aren't a current subscriber and would like to receive the magazine, please click here to subscribe.

Download and Use a QR Code Reader to Scan the August Cover of Wine Business Monthly (You can even scan the code on the August cover above on your computer screen now!)

You can find and install a QR Code reader for most Smartphones very easily. Simply go to the application store or market, search for QR Code and choose one. At least 69 are available for the iPhone and dozens for the Droid. Most are free.

Here at the Wine Business Monthly office, we use QR Reader for the iPhone and Barcode Scanner for the Droid.

Once you download the app and open it up on your phone, it will use the phone’s camera to scan the code once you hold the camera over the code. Once the code is scanned, depending on what the creator of the QR Code has programmed, the app will open either a simple text description or take you to a website or video.
