Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits is expanding its fine wine portfolio by partnering with California wine mogul Dan Cohn. The company is purchasing a 50% stake in the Bellacosa brand, a North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon. The deal is expected to close in February.

A native of Sonoma County, the entrepreneurial-minded Cohn was exposed to the wine industry early, learning every aspect of the business at his family’s winery B.R. Cohn. In 2015, he stepped out to start his own namesake wine company, and Bellacosa Cabernet Sauvignon was born.

Deutsch Family CEO Peter Deutsch and Cohn met last year and there was an instant connection, both having grown up in the wine industry with mentor fathers. The opportunity to work together came naturally.

“Bellacosa is an extraordinary wine and a terrific value, at $15 by the glass it will be a key lever in helping us win with on-premise,” said Deutsch. “More and more people are trading up to this premium price segment, with Cabernet leading the charge. It’s a perfect fit for us, filling out the higher end of our premium wine portfolio.”

“As someone who’s been in the wine industry almost my entire life, I’ve built relationships along the way with incredible people who have become my family. This is how I feel about Bill and Peter,” said Cohn. “Partnering with another family-owned business that recognizes the value of people is important to me. The Deutsch Family understands the Bellacosa story, and I’m confident their distribution network will help get the wine in the right accounts.”

The brand launched in October 2015 with the 2014 vintage. The wine’s proprietary name, Bellacosa, means “It’s a beautiful thing.” Cohn relies on his industry contacts to source the best parcels for Bellacosa from vineyards throughout Sonoma, Napa, Oakville and Coombsville. Bellacosa is a single SKU plus a limited release Oakville Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.

Bellacosa has attracted critical attention, including a 90-point score from Robert Parker. It retails for $25.00. Production is approximately 20,000 cases.
