Portuguese Wine Sales Continues to See Strong Growth in 2014

Based on recent ViniPortugal data, Wines of Portugal have announced another strong semester of export growth in the U.S. market, with a 19.1 percent increase in the first half of 2014 (January-June) compared to the same period in 2013. Sales of Portuguese table wines (excluding port wine) improved to €15.47 million ($19.5 million at 10/1/14), up from €12.99 million ($16.29 million at 9/31/13) during the first half of the year prior, a clear reflection of the growing consumer interest in Portugal’s unique varieties and masterful blends.

In March of 2012, Wines of Portugal ( launched a $2.4 million campaign to promote Portuguese wines in the U.S. The campaign’s efforts, led by Wines of Portugal marketing director Nuno Vale and his team, seem to have paid off nicely, with sales increasing by double digits (average 15 percent per year) over the two full years of the program. “Wines of Portugal are extremely pleased with the consistent growth of the Portuguese wine category in the United States since the launch,” said Nuno Vale. “Based on the positive feedback received from trade and press over the past year, we are confident that consumers will want to further explore the incredible diversity of Portugal’s many premium offerings as awareness grows.”

With Portugal’s export volumes to the U.S. also continuing to climb – up 21 percent for the first half of 2014, volume sales of Portuguese wines saw an increase from 5.37 million liters in the first half of 2013 to 6.51 million liters during the same period of 2014.
