Dean Allison Receives Canadian Wine Industry Champion Award

July 18, 2014

KELOWNA -- The Wine Industry Champion Award was recently presented to Dean Allison, Federal Member of Parliament for the Niagara West-Glanbrook riding in Ontario, recognizing Allison’s exemplary support for the Canadian wine industry and contributions to the overall strength and long-term viability of the industry.

“As the champion of the excise duty exemption on 100 percent Canadian wine in 2006, Allison has strengthened every single Canadian winery,” said Tony Stewart, CVA chair and president of Quails' Gate Winery. “Over the last decade, Mr. Allison has supported the Canadian wine industry through fostering stronger federal relationships and endorsing key legislation such as the excise duty exemption on 100 percent Canadian wine, as well as the most recent federal Icewine definition.”

“I am truly honoured to receive this prestigious award from the Canadian Vintners Association,” said Allison. “From the time I was first elected in 2004, I realized very quickly how important wineries were to the local economy. I have always supported the Canadian wine industry, and more specifically in Ontario and my home riding of Niagara West-Glanbrook. The wineries in Niagara not only contribute substantially to the local economy through direct employment and sales of their products, but also become destination spots that help to support the tourism industry in our area.”

The awards were presented on July 8, 2014, in concert with the BC Wine Institute’s Wine Industry Recognition Award. The event was held in Kelowna, BC, at CedarCreek Estate Winery with 150 industry and political guests of honour.
