Redstone Meadery Announces Availability Of Its Nectar Line Of Mead In Cans

Boulder, Colorado-based meadery among first in nation to offer commercially available canned mead
August 09, 2013

Boulder, Colorado – August 8, 2013 – Redstone Meadery, the largest craft mead producer in the United States, has announced that three flavors in its carbonated 'Nectar' line are now available in 500 ml (16.9 ounce) cans, and are shipping to distributors nationally this week.

Redstone Meadery has been a trend-setter in the craft mead industry since its inception 12 years ago. Now the second highest total producer on a volume basis, Redstone makes 16 different flavors of mead, and was the first to create a line of draft mead in kegs. Redstone is testing the waters by canning three of its flavors, and anticipates that consumers will appreciate the convenience and lower price point of the 500 ml serving.

“We have seen the acceptance that craft beers in cans has received, and we wanted people to be able to take mead on camping trips, into venues, and to other places that prohibit glass bottles,” says David Myers, owner and founder of Redstone Meadery. “Also, because of the reduced shipping costs, we're able to offer mead in cans at a lower price per ounce, and we pass that savings on to the consumer.”

Three flavors—Black Raspberry Nectar, the apricot-flavored Sunshine Nectar, and Nectar of the Hops—will be available nationally in 500 ml cans. Two other flavors in the Nectar line, Boysenberry Nectar and Mango Nectar, are available in 750 ml bottles in Colorado as a limited release. All have an alcohol content of 8 percent by volume.

Myers says canning their Nectar mead has been a project for a few years, but that because mead is regulated as a wine product, they had trouble finding suitable cans. “As with wine, we are limited to certain package sizes, and we finally found the perfect 500ml cans from a supplier in England,” Myers explains. “The awareness of mead in the United States is really growing, and we hope people find our Nectar mead in cans as refreshing as we do.”

Also known as honey wine, mead is an alcoholic beverage produced by fermenting water and honey with yeast. Fruits, spices, different types of honey, and even hops can be added to create a wide range of flavors. Mead can be dry or sweet, sparkling or still, and low or high in alcohol.
