SONOMA, CA – Bundschu Company, the parent company to California’s oldest family-owned winery, Gundlach Bundschu, is excited to announce the purchase of the winery and vineyard property at the historic Rancho Agua Caliente in Sonoma Valley, the current home to Valley of the Moon Winery. The 60-acre property, purchased from West Coast Wine Partners owned by the Stewart Family, will become the new home to Abbot’s Passage Winery & Mercantile later this year.

The purchase not only creates a new hospitality opportunity for Abbot’s Passage but also significantly increases production capacity for Bundschu Company to more than three times the current amount.  The acquisition reinforces the Bundschu’s commitment to the Sonoma Valley as they set the stage to continue to produce quality wines and experiences relevant for generations to come.

“As multigenerational Sonoma vintners, the Bundschu family is honored to take the reins from the Stewarts and become stewards of another incredible piece of Sonoma Valley winemaking history,” says Jeff Bundschu, president of Bundschu Company. “We’ve been an integral part of this community since 1858 and we’re excited to continue our commitment to the region, producing quality wines and experiences for our guests.”

“We could not be more thrilled that this historic estate is being passed to the hands of such a dedicated family here in the Sonoma Valley,” says Tony Stewart, president of West Coast Wine Partners. “We are excited to retain the Valley of the Moon brand and will continue to craft wines under this label that best reflect its inherent Sonoma personality.”

Originally settled by Mariano Vallejo in 1861, the property includes a Zinfandel vineyard planted in 1940 and a historic barrel room built in 1863. While the hospitality space will undergo select renovations following the acquisition, the Bundschu Company is committed to maintaining and preserving the historic integrity of the structures.

Bundschu Company has acquired the property from West Coast Wine Partners for an undisclosed sum. West Coast Wine Partners will retain ownership of the Valley of the Moon brand following the deal, and operate it from their Lake Sonoma property.
