IQ 2019 Session Preview: Climate Change and the Future of Winemaking

by Press Release
May 13, 2019

Climate change is a hot topic (pun intended) in the wine industry. But do you know what, if any, threat climate change poses to ultra-premium winemaking? This session will discuss how rising temperatures ripening, maturity, alcohol level and resulting wine aesthetic, as well as explore recommended vineyard management and winemaking techniques to counteract the consistently warmer growing seasons.

The session will feature a panel of experts, including Elizabeth Wolkovich, associate professor, University of British Columbia; Daniel Daou, winemaker and co-proprietor, Daou Family Estates; Nicolas Quille, chief winemaking and operations officer, Crimson Wine Group; and Dr. Hans Reiner Schultz, president, Geisenheim University.

With research on how a warming climate affects Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varieties, Wolkovich is an expert in the first-hand implications of temperature on viticulture. She has presented some of her other research at the Porto Protocol Climate Change Conference earlier this year. Daniel Daou has completed extensive trials on shade cloth, and how different colors of cloth protect—or don’t protect— his grapes. He’ll pour wines from the trials so that attendees can taste for themselves. Nicolas Quille, as chief winemaking and operations officer for Crimson Wine Group, is tasked with maintaining high-quality grapes across all properties, each vineyard experiencing its own changing climate. He’ll talk about the ways he’s mitigating the effects.
