Trefethen Family Vineyards Opens New Visitor Center
June 30, 2016
Napa, CA June 29, 2016 The Trefethen family is welcoming winery guests into “Villa Trefethen” for the first time. The past residence of vineyard founders Katie and Gene Trefethen, originally constructed in 1922, is a fine example of the Arts and Crafts Movement in California. The elegant woodwork, of a quality rarely seen today, reflects the style’s embrace of craftsmanship and natural materials. Surrounded by the late Mrs. Trefethen’s acclaimed gardens, the Villa offers a variety of tasting experiences in the salon, sunroom and deck.
The Villa opening comes 20 months after the Trefethens were forced to set up a temporary tasting room following the August 2014 Napa earthquake. The 6.0 shaker had severely damaged their historic winery building. The temporary “tent” performed valiantly despite heavy rain, hail and the occasional wildlife invasion. “We cannot thank our loyal fans and customers enough for their patience and support of this temporary location,” stated Janet Trefethen. Despite the challenge, Trefethen maintained its spot on the “Top 15 things to do in Napa” on TripAdvisor.
Although the Villa is now open, the family is still working diligently on the restoration of the historic winery building, which they expect to complete in early 2017. Hailey Trefethen explained, “We have the rare opportunity to restore and improve a historic landmark. All of the original elements of the beautiful wooden structure will be retained, including the open floor plan and the gorgeous redwood siding throughout. But we are also including a full seismic retrofit and adding modern insulation. The experience for our wines aging in barrel and our guests visiting the winery will be better than ever.”
The Villa is open by appointment from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm daily. Call the winery at 800-556-4847 for reservations or book online at www.cellarpass.com. Tastings start at $25.00 per person. The popular Twilight tastings are scheduled to return by late summer. Learn more at www.trefethen.com.
About Trefethen Family Vineyards
In 1968, Eugene (d. 1996) and Catherine Trefethen (d. 2007) purchased a run-down vineyard with a 19th-century ghost winery. The couple’s intention was to sell all their grapes, but their son, John, had other ideas. In 1973, aided by his new bride, Janet, John produced Trefethen Vineyards’ first commercial wine. True to the family’s vision of creating an acclaimed wine estate, they have grown every grape for every bottle of Trefethen. Today, the Trefethen family’s third generation, Loren and Hailey, assist their parents in continuing the family tradition of passion for the land, its people, and the art of crafting exceptional Napa Valley wines.
