What wines are grabbing consumers right now?
When it comes to wine purchases, consumers generally are more conservative of late, yet when it comes to different varietals, they still show interest in new things.
Among the top ten varitals tracked by The Nielsen Company, Riesling is growing the fastest, up about 7.5 percent this year, with Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc also growing quickly.

When it comes to reds, Pinot Noir is still growing, but Malbec is growing fastest and is starting to have a substantial volume base. In the last 13 weeks, that growth was more than 50 percent.
Another fast growing wine is Moscato, growing even quicker than Malbec. Other wines seeing high growth, albeit on a small base, are Petit Sirah and Tempranillo.
“There are some consumers that still are open to experimentation in the wine category,” Brager noted.
