Vineyard Brands Adds Hamilton Russell Oregon, to its Curated Fine Wine Portfolio

Posted on March 25, 2020

New York City, N.Y.—Vineyard Brands, an employee-owned importer of fine wines, representing some of the wine industry’s finest brands, is proud to announce the addition of two Hamilton Russell Oregon wines to its portfolio. Hamilton Russell Oregon is a new project from Anthony and Olive Hamilton Russell, pioneers of viticulture and winemaking in South Africa’s Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, the beautiful appellation just behind the old fishing village of Hermanus on Walker Bay. Two site-specific Pinot Noirs are released now: the 2018 Bramble Hill Pinot Noir and the 2018 Zena Crown Pinot Noir.

Over 40 vintages Hamilton Russell Vineyards in South Africa developed an international reputation for unusually restrained, classically styled Pinot Noir, with deep structure and spice balancing fruit opulence. Hamilton Russell Oregon aims to express this stylistic philosophy with the very best Willamette Valley fruit – showcasing the retrained classicism of great European Pinot Noir and the bright purity of Oregon fruit. The two Pinot Noirs produced from the applauded Eola-Amity Hills and Ribbon Ridge appellations reflect their appellations perfectly and offer an excellent level of refinement. The celebrated Zena Crown vineyard in Eola-Amity Hills delivers a dark spice and tensile, fine-grained tannin structure to balance the complex lifted fruit the Oregon Pinot Noir is best known for; the Bramble Hill vineyard in Ribbon Ridge offers a particularly bright, pure, lively minerality to complement the exquisite and multidimensional fruit quality.

Born in Cape Town, South Africa in 1962, Anthony Hamilton Russell has emulated the pioneering spirit of his father Tim, who founded Hamilton Russell Vineyards in 1975 on an undeveloped 420-acre property. It was not long after Anthony took over the family farm in 1991 and narrowed the range to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay only, that he took his first trip to Oregon. From his first visit to Oregon in 1993 until now, Anthony Hamilton Russell has kept a close eye on the development of the quality and style across Oregon’s now seven appellations. Known to be a passionate advocate of expressing origin – and soil structure in particular – in wines and of aiming for a more “classic” styling, Anthony was encouraged by recent evolutions in the burgeoning Oregon wine scene. Today, Anthony explains: “the trend amongst certain top Oregon producers to dial-back ripeness levels and aim at a tighter, less fruit-driven, spicier, and more mineral character convinced me that if we did anything in the Northern Hemisphere in keeping with what we stand for, Oregon was the place.” While the Hamilton Russell team brings with them years of experience and know-how, they see their Oregon project as a great learning opportunity, which should ultimately inform the quality and styling of all their wines.

“We are thrilled to welcome two exceptionally refined Oregon Pinot Noirs to our portfolio. Anthony and Olive Hamilton Russell are outstanding partners who continue to impress us with their sophistication, tireless dedication to quality, and innovative ethos,” said Gregory Doody, President and CEO of Vineyard Brands, the exclusive importer of Hamilton Russell Family Vineyards wines in the United States.
