Vineyard Brands Announces a New Addition to its Italian Wine Portfolio: Tenuta di Fessina

Oct 1, 2018

New York City, October 23, 2018 - Vineyard Brands, an employee-owned importer representing some of the wine industry’s finest brands, is proud to announce the addition of Tenuta di Fessina, a winery on Mount Etna in Siciliy, to its portfolio of Italian wines. The announcement reflects the commitment of Vineyard Brands to partner with family-owned companies and to select and offer wines of the best quality and value from the best places on earth. “Since Silvia Maestrelli founded Tenuta di Fessina in 2007, in the village of Rovittello, on the northeastern side of Mount Etna, she has developed one of the most successful and recognizable cellars in the Etna area and has become the perfect ambassador of today’s Sicilian viticulture,” explains Gregory Doody, President and CEO of Vineyards Brands, the exclusive importer of Tenuta di Fessina in the United States.

“Producing wine means carrying on a family tradition,” explains Silvia Maestrelli. “Following in the footsteps of my father, Moreno Maestrelli, I have been honoring his legacy by actively pursuing my passion for wine. Ten years ago I decided to purchase an old vineyard of Nerello Mascalese, known as “Vigne di Fessina” from a local vigneron named Ignazio Musmeci in the hamlet of Rovittello, near the town of Castiglione di Sicilia. My top red wine “Il Musmeci” is dedicated to Ignazio’s memory.” Silvia Maestrelli adds: “Tenuta di Fessina combines my love for the Sicilian land and its extraordinary cultural, historical and environmental resources with my love for winemaking.”

The vineyards, 17 acres in Rovittello and six acres between Milo and Santa Maria di Licodía, are located on different sides of Mount Etna and produce the best expressions of the indigenous varietals. The new vineyards were planted with the help of Federico Curtaz who worked as Gaja’s agronomist for twenty years, and since 2015 the winemaker is Giandomenico Negro Yields are low as many vines are 80-110 years old and the altitude of the vineyards ranges from 2,000-2,700 feet.

Fessina’s offerings in the United States include seven wines:
• Erse Wines: Erse Etna Bianco DOC (Carricante, Minnella and Catarratto); Erse Etna Rosato DOC (Nerello Mascalase and Nerello Cappuccio); and Erse Etna Rosso DOC (Nerello Mascalase and Nerello Cappuccio);
• Laeneo: Laeneo Sicilia DOC Nerello Cappuccio; Media Contact: Caroline Shook – Social Media & PR Coordinator Email: cshook@vineyardbrands.com – Phone: 205 949 6279
