Pressure on local wineries to reduce visitor counts has been rising over the past years as more wineries with a heavy focus on director-to-consumer (DTC) retail open. While the forward-thinking Napa Valley, long the crown jewel of the winemaking world, passed the 1990 Wine Definition Ordinance (WDO)--which defines wineries as an agricultural land use and caps visitors--others have come late to the solution game.

Canned wine is currently experiencing incredible growth, with a recent Nielsen report showing an increase of more than 122.5% in sales compared to this time last year, bringing the total category to more than $14.5 million this year. While that is still a small percentage of the total wine category, it does indicate consumer acceptance of the concept, which makes room for new, higher-quality entries, including Backpack Wine™.
Net sales increased 19.1 percent to $25.8 million for the 12-month period, compared to a year ago. That included $20 million in sales to wholesalers, an increase of 19.1 percent from a year earlier, and $5.8 million in sales directly to consumers, a jump of 19.3 percent.
