The Office of U.S. Trade Representative (OUSTR) had long ago lodged a protest against and challenge to the B.C. grocery store rule, referring to it as a discriminatory measure that gives local wine a "substantial competitive advantage." The U.S. called on the World Trade Organization (WTO) to create a panel to settle the dispute. The dispute has not been settled.

One weird trick B.C. uses to keep out Washington wine
Canadian wines now can be sold on B.C. grocery shelves from Chilliwack to Kitimat, but grocers can only stock imported wines if they set up a "store within a store" that is physically separated and has its own cash registers. Not surprisingly, according to the U.S. Trade Representative, "we are not aware of any grocery stores selling wine pursuant to the more costly 'store within a store' option."
