Calgary Police Charge Fired Wine Salesman in $1.3M Scam
The former vice-president of a high-end wine agency who was fired for "moonlighting" by making side deals now faces criminal charges in what Calgary police are calling a $1.3-million Ponzi scheme involving wine. Police say Brian Robert Gunsten, 52, defrauded seven people in a scam that was "disguised as an investment opportunity involving wine purchases."

Motion Enters Into Agreement To Purchase Industrial Products Distributor
Motion Industries, Inc., a leading distributor of maintenance, repair and operation replacement parts, and a premier provider of industrial technology solutions, signed a definitive purchase agreement to acquire the operating assets of Canadian-based LSI Supply Inc. and its sister company 273 Ontario (which trades as LSI). Solvero Wines Harvest 2024 Outlook
The team at Summerland BC winery, Solvero Wines, has unveiled its action plan to source grapes come harvest time, as they are not able to harvest fruit from the winery's BC vineyards. In late July Solvero GM and winemaker, Alison Moyes, embarked on a wine adventure when she traveled to Washington and Oregon, visiting the best AVA regions in search of premium, boutique-style Chardonnay grapes. Like many wineries, the vines in Solvero vineyards suffered bud damage due to two back-to-back winters featuring frigid cold snaps.

FCC Supports B.C. Wine And Fruit Producers Amid Difficult Season
Farm Credit Canada (FCC) is reminding B.C. fruit and wine customers of its support for those experiencing financial hardship amid a difficult growing season and the recent closure of a local fruit co-operative. FCC recognizes the compounding challenges of 2024, in particular the cold weather in January 2024 that wiped out almost all of B.C.'s peaches, apricots and nectarines for the year and severely damaged cherry orchards. Wine grapes were also severely impacted with no 2024 vintage expected for some.

B.C. Government Outlines Initial Relief Plan for Local Wineries
Adds details: At present, wines made with grapes from outside the province are marked up 89% on the first $11.75 of the cost per liter of wine and 27% after that. "It turns your $20 bottle of wine into a $35 bottle of wine." Under the new guidance, the B.C. government will provide mark-up relief on wines sold between April 1st 2025 and March 31st 2026.. It appears to provide wineries with wide latitude to import whole grapes and unprocessed juice, in addition to nearly finished bulk wine to fill more immediate needs. The LDB will determine the maximum amount of relief available to each winery based on the five-year average of markup concessions and rebates normally provided for wines made in B.C., throwing out the high and low numbers. Relief for B.C. wineries protects 2024 vintage, jobs
Important. Following this year's devastating loss of grapes, B.C. wineries will benefit from temporary support that will allow B.C. wines to be made with grapes and grape juice from places outside of the province - such as Washington State which has grapes - for the 2024 vintage year.

On 5 July, the more than 9,000 employees of the provincially-owned Liquor Board of Ontario (LCBO) walked off the job after negotiations for a new collective agreement between their union and Mr Ford's government fell apart. The LCBO then shuttered all its 650 stores for at least two weeks. Last week, the Ontario Public Services Employees Union (OPSEU) returned to the bargaining table.
