Montreal Mayor supports idea of deposit fees on wine bottles
The city spends $27,000 plus tax disposing of glass products at a cost of $18 a tonne each month, Coderre said. In total, 1,500 tonnes of glass is disposed of monthly, 80 per cent of it derived from SAQ bottles. Most cannot be recycled into bottles because it breaks during the recycling process and is mixed with other materials. Most ends up being used as construction filler or dumped in landfills.
