Te Kairanga Appoints John Kavanagh as Chief Winemaker

Date: 03/29/12

Foley Family Wines NZ is delighted to announce the appointment of John Kavanagh as Chief Winemaker for Te Kairanga. John will assume the position after completing the 2012 vintage as winemaker at Neudorf Vineyards in Nelson.

John’s appointment is a significant step in the evolution of Te Kairanga under new owner Bill Foley. “Te Kairanga is considered one of New Zealand’s leading producers,” said Bill Foley. “We hired John to enhance the quality of our wines and expand our reputation as a world-class producer of Pinot Noir.”

Under John’s direction, Neudorf achieved high international acclaim over the past years including being featured on the cover of Decanter Magazine last year. “I see a great opportunity in coming to Te Kairanga to follow my early dream of making great Pinot Noir in Marlborough,” said John. “Te Kairanga holds excellent parcels of Martinborough terrace vines. I look forward to showing the world what we can do with them”

Established more than 20 years ago, Te Kairanga (TK) is one of Martinborough's oldest wineries. Its vineyards are located on land once owned by the founding father of Martinborough, John Martin, in the late 1800s.
