J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines (www.jlohr.com) announced the promotion of Karl Antink to white winemaker. Antink joined the J. Lohr winemaking team as assistant winemaker in 2006, and working alongside veteran winemaker Jeff Meier, he has been instrumental in every aspect of J. Lohr’s white wine program from vineyard development to the launch of new wines, including the J. Lohr Highlands Bench Chardonnay, and most recently, the J. Lohr Estates Flume Crossing Sauvignon Blanc. As white winemaker, Antink will work with Meier to guide the winery’s white wine portfolio in the company’s San Jose winemaking facility, and at its nearly completed winery in Greenfield, Monterey County. Red Winemaker Steve Peck will continue to oversee the red wine program at J. Lohr’s Paso Robles winery.
Before joining J. Lohr in 2006, Antink spent five years as the winemaker for Von Strasser Winery in Calistoga, where he guided production of the winery’s portfolio and managed both the vineyard and winery crews. Prior to that, Antink was the assistant winemaker at St. Helena’s Folie à Deux, where he supervised all of the winery’s day-to-day operations. Antink holds a degree in fermentation science from U.C. Davis, and is also a graduate of the U.C. Davis Master Brewers Extension Program.
“Karl is a gifted winemaker,” says president, COO and director of winemaking Jeff Meier, “Working side-by-side with Karl for the past seven years, I have gained great respect for his gifted palate, inquisitive nature, attention to detail and his ability to make things happen. Our palates are very much in sync, and we have a shared vision for what we want to achieve. This promotion is a natural progression, and very deserved.”
Meier will continue to work closely with both Antink and Peck to ensure the stylistic continuity of all the wines in the J. Lohr portfolio, and will continue to oversee winemaking quality and innovation.
