Donelan Family Wines Announces Appointment of New Winemaker

Date: 07/01/13

Donelan Family Wines (www.donelanwines.com) announced the appointment of assistant winemaker Joe Nielsen as the new head winemaker of the award-winning Sonoma County winery.

Nielsen, who has been with Donelan since 2009, worked at wineries in both Michigan and California before joining Donelan. An early passion for winemaking fueled Nielsen’s hands-on education that began with planting his own vineyard at age 18 and completing his enology education at Michigan State at an accelerated rate.

Donelan Family Wines also accepted the resignation of current winemaker Tyler Thomas, effective July 1. Thomas will continue to be involved with Donelan Wines as a friend, partner and consultant to the winery.

“Tyler has provided us with five amazing vintages and we’re so thankful for all of his contributions over the years, including bringing Joe Nielsen to the team,” said Joe Donelan, founder of Donelan Family Wines. “We wish Tyler nothing but the best in his future endeavors. We’re looking forward and are excited about how Joe’s ideas will shape the future of our brand.”

As part of the company’s fresh vision, Tripp Donelan, director of sales, and Cushing Donelan, director of marketing, will increase their visibility as the face of the brand as the winery expands on-premise and off-premise availability across the country.

“We’re focused on the future and are excited about deeper family involvement and new energy for the brand,” said Donelan. “Creating and sharing beautiful wine is a very personal experience for us and we want all who taste our wines to feel as though they’re part of the Donelan Family.”
