Grgich Hills Estate Hires Michael Eckstein as Associate Winemaker

Date: 06/21/13

Michael Eckstein has joined Grgich Hills Estate as associate winemaker.

Ivo Jeramaz, vice president of vineyards and production, announced the hiring, saying, “Michael’s long history of crafting stylish luxury wines and his experience and knowledge will be an asset to our winemaking team. Adding talent like Michael is how we continue to enhance our operations.”

Eckstein was winemaker at Franciscan Oakville Estate for six years after gaining extensive experience in producing fine wines at Domaine Chandon, Rudd Vineyards and Winery and Robert Mondavi Winery.

He earned a MS degree in food science and a B.S. degree in fermentation science from University of California, Davis.

Located at 1829 St. Helena Hwy (Hwy. 29) in Rutherford, Grgich Hills Estate was founded in 1977 by Miljenko “Mike” Grgich and Austin Hills after Mike’s Chardonnay outscored the best of France in the now-famous 1976 Paris Tasting.

Today, this iconic winery farms 366 acres naturally, without artificial pesticides or herbicides, and uses its passion and art to handcraft food-friendly, balanced and elegant wines. Mike just celebrated his 90th birthday and he is assisted by his daughter, Violet Grgich, vice president of operations, and his nephew, Ivo Jeramaz, vice president of vineyards and production.
