Off-Premise Wine Sales Increase 2.2 Percent in January
Sweet reds and Moscato show tremendous growth

Off-premise wine sales data increased 2.2 percent from the same period of the previous year in the 4 weeks ending January 7, 2012, according to The Nielsen Company-tracked data. In the 13 weeks ending during the same period, wine sales increased 2.3 percent.

Domestic wine sales increased 4.3 percent while imported wine sales fell 2.8 percent in the 4 weeks ending January 7. In case volume during that same period, domestic wines increased 1.8 percent while imported case volume fell 4.2 percent.

Of note are the sweet red and Moscato/Muscat categories, which both had tremendous growth. The sweet red category grew 154.3 percent in the 4 weeks ending January 7 and Moscato was up 54.6 during the same period. In the 13 weeks ending January 7, sweet red wine sales grew 172.5 percent and Moscato sales grew 59.3 percent.

In the 4 weeks ending January 7, most of the growth took place in the over $20 price segment, followed by the $9 to $11.99 segment. Wine sales for the over $20 segment grew 11.9 percent while the $9 to $11.99 segment grew 10.4 percent. In volume, the over $20 segment grew 12.5 percent while the $9 to $11.99 segment was up 13.3 percent.

In the 13 weeks ending the same period, wine sales for the over $20 segment grew 9.4 percent and the $9 to $11.99 segment grew 9.3 percent. In volume, the over $20 segment was up 10.6 percent and the $9 to $11.99 segment was up 11 percent.

Wine sales in the $0 to $2.99, $3 to $5.99 and $6 to $8.99 price segments all fell in the 4 weeks ending January 7.
