Steve Ledson Adds Mountain Terraces to His Portfolio
KENWOOD, CA (July 1, 2014)—Steve Ledson, the fifth-generation winemaker who has founded and established Ledson Winery and Zina Hyde Cunningham brands has added to his portfolio by purchasing the spectacular Mountain Terrace Vineyard in Sonoma. He has announced his plan to produce two new wines from the breathtaking vineyard and those wines will comprise his exclusive new Mountain Terraces wine brand. Mountain Terraces can be reached at 707-996-1787 or by visiting www.mountainterraces.com.
The 125-acre property sits high atop the Mayacamas Mountain range some 1,800 feet above the Sonoma Valley floor. Mountain Terrace Vineyard is among the first vineyards identified with the brand new Moon Mountain District AVA appellation. Currently, Ledson is hand-crafting two different Cabernet Sauvignons. “This is a truly phenomenal vineyard capable of producing some marvelous, world-class wines,” states a very enthusiastic Ledson. “I decided to continue calling it Mountain Terraces as a homage to the location and because when visitors arrive at the vineyard site, it is nearly at the top of the mountain.”
Mountain Terraces Vineyard is located within the 17,663 acres of the Moon Mountain District, with only 1,500 acres planted. This area was approved as an American Viticultural Area in October 2013. This is an uncharacteristically small block of land to be designated as an accredited appellation, but because of the uniqueness and quality of the grapes grown in this area, it was granted very special approval. The idiosyncratic microclimate of the Moon Mountain District experiences temperature inversions that create more even ripening conditions on its slopes than on the surrounding valley floor, promoting the ideal environment for flourishing, quality fruit. The Mountain Terraces Vineyard’s southwestern facing, well-drained site has all of the hallmarks of a world class vineyard. It delivers not only consistency and naturally low yields, but features three distinctively different soil types; White Rhyolite, Brown Andosite, and Red Basalt. Alone, these soils create bold, one of a kind flavor characteristics, and combined together, they produce wines with endlessly abundant layers of fruit and delightful variation and complexity.
Ledson purchased the property in December of 2012. In addition to the 125 acres of existing vineyards, there is a working, state-of-the-art winery and two guesthouses offering visitors stunning views of the Sonoma Valley and greater Bay Area including the Golden Gate Bridge. Mountain Terraces Winery will be open for vineyard tours and tastings by appointment only. Mountain Terraces wines will be tasted and sold exclusively at the winery, although they may be purchased (on allocation only) by members of the Wine Club. Mountain Terraces wine club members can make a reservation at the guesthouses, at no cost, but there is a small annual maintenance fee.
Wine Club membership benefits include an annual November shipment of Mountain Terraces “Moon Mountain District” Wine, access to the spectacular guesthouses, complimentary wine tastings at the winery for a party of 6, private helicopter tours of the soaring vistas, savings at the Ledson Hotel & Centre Du Vin, as well as exclusive invitations to member-only events.
Over the years, several acclaimed winemakers have made wines from Mountain Terrace Vineyards. All have been extremely impressed, not only with the quality, but the unique character the rocky volcanic soil and microclimate bring to the wine. However, as good as the fruit from the Mountain Terrace Vineyard has been, the irrepressible Ledson intends to replant much of the vineyard in the upcoming years. “I believe with the right rootstocks, clones, row direction and vine spacing, this vineyard will be over the top.” Not only does Ledson expect to produce a total of 3,000 cases of wine annually, with the first wines available by the end of this year, he also produces an olive oil, which he says will be the purest virgin olive oil one can find that is made exclusively from olive trees on the property. The olive oil can be purchased online, at Ledson Winery, or at the Ledson Hotel in downtown Sonoma.
