Thinking of building up your export business? John Doxon of Crimson Wine Estates offered a few things to remember when entering this market at Wine Institute's annual export seminar last week:
You're not a big deal outside of the United States
Any reputation you have built in the states has disappeared. You will be starting from scratch.
You have to get your hands dirty
The common denominator for success in this business is travel. You need to get out there, explore and understand the markets and build long-term relationships.
Begin with a few countries and really excel in exporting and selling to them. From there, use the relationships you built to more easily expand into other areas.
