Wine Business Monthly contributing editor and long-time winemaker Lance Cutler leads a comparative tasting of red blends today at WiVi Central Coast 2013, including:

Paso Robles Flight:
• JUSTIN Vineyards & Wines – 2009 Isosceles
• L’Aventure Winery – 2010 Estate Cuvee
• RN Estate – 2009 Cuvee des Trois Cepages

Washington Flight:
• Baer Winery – 2010 Ursa
• Andrew Will Winery – 2009 Two Blondes Vineyard
• Rasa Winery – 2009 Perfect Union

Napa Flight:
• Cain Winery – 2007 Cain Five
• Bacio Divino Cellars – 2009 Divine Kiss
• Robert Craig Winery – 2009 Howell Mountain

One of the three winemakers on the panel, and last to be featured here, is Stephan Asseo, owner and winemaker at L'Aventure Winery

From the winery's website:
Asseo began making wine in 1982, following his education at L'Ecole Oenologique de Macon, Burgundy, France. In that same year, Stephan established Domaine Courteillac in Bordeaux. He and his family later purchased Chateau Fleur Cardinal and Chateau Robin in the Cotes de Castillion, Bordeaux. Over the next 15 years, Stephan developed into an artisan winemaker and gained a reputation as a maverick vigneron.

About the 2010 L'Aventure Estate Cuvée: 42% Syrah, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Petit Verdot - This is one of the more “classic” versions of Stephan’s iconic Cab/ Syrah blend. While generously juicy, in the spirit of the vintage, it captures the essence of the blend, with exuberant Syrah notes brought to heel by an almost austere Cabernet. As usual, there are so many complexities and layers of flavor in this wine, that you really need to lay down a few cases and watch it develop over the years. This is definitely the “crème de la crème” from the 2010 range.
