The Lempert Report has announced its Top 10 Food Trends 2013. Phil Lempert writes about them here in the e-publication, "Facts, Figures & the Future." Among those, Lempert reports on Trend #10 in this video, "Transparency: Who is Making Our Food?"
He says:
"As we have seen over the past twelve months, people are choosing their foods more holistically… asking who is making their foods along with understanding the impact on our environment and animal welfare... We predict that 2013 will be a transitional year as package claims proliferate and may confuse; look for supermarkets to take up the role of gatekeeper and actually demand proof (transparency!) of these claims before they will permit them to be sold on their shelves."
Interesting that Lampert's program is sponsored by Monsanto and ConAgra Foods, industry giants who put millions of dollars behind defeating California's recent Prop 37, a law which would have put the responsibility of labeling genetically modified foods on food producers.
Do you think supermarket chains are going to take this on as their responsibility?
