Napa, Calif.—Starting May 1, 2019, the esteemed wines of California’s Foppiano Vineyards will be marketed and sold exclusively in the US by Quintessential, the Napa, CA-based import, marketing and sales company co-owned by father and son, Stephen D. and Dennis Kreps. Founded in 1896 by Giovanni Foppiano in what is now the Russian River AVA (that his great-grandson, Louis M. Foppiano helped to establish), Foppiano is among the state’s oldest continually-operated, family-owned wineries.
Louis M., now Foppiano’s Chairman of the Board, and President and Vineyard Manager Paul Foppiano, are the fourth and fifth generation of this highly respected wine family. They currently run a 160-acre estate, with 117 acres planted to a variety of white and red grapes. Cool morning fog and warm summer days create an ideal microclimate for the kind of ripe, expressive fruit that has become the hallmark of Foppiano wines -- true expressions of the grapes coming from those specific estate vines and soils. In 1964, Foppiano was the first winery in California to make a Petite Sirah varietal wine and it is acknowledged as the benchmark Petite Sirah of the region.

Dennis explained that Quintessential’s top priority is to ensure that Foppiano’s image as a top-quality producer from one of the country’s premiere AVAs translates into wide-spread respect for the wines among sommeliers and restaurant wine-buyers. “We’re committed to helping Foppiano claim its rightful place on the wine lists of the finest restaurants in the country,” he states, “and to guide them through today’s market challenges in an effort to extend their very long and fruitful run well into the 21st Century.”
Paul Foppiano manages the estate’s vineyards with a great respect for the earth, sustainability and old-world family traditions. After earning a degree in viticulture, Paul followed his passion and furthered his education at some historic Sonoma vineyards, mentored by legendary producers, working his way up in vineyard management before returning to the Foppiano family estate.
Since 1999, he has been a leading team member at the winery. In 2013, he became acting President and is very aware of the responsibilities that come with taking the reins of such a historic property.
“I always keep my father, grandfather, and all the way back to great-great-granddad Giovanni in mind when making important decisions about the winery,” Paul revealed. “I want to honor our family by continuing the traditions and respecting the historic influence they’ve had since 1896 in Healdsburg and in the CA wine industry, while also embracing the technical innovations that make sense for us to continue to produce the best wines this unique land will allow.”
In 2015, winemaker Nova Perril joined the team as chief winemaker, bringing with him a commitment to quality in the cellar and the vineyards. With a graduate degree in winemaking, Nova has an impressive viticulture and winemaking background and employs a hand-crafted approach, including sorting grapes harvested in small bins, gentle handling of the fruit, open-top fermenters and a French oak barrel program. He works closely with Paul to create a seamless process of moving the fruit from the vine to the bottle.
The Foppiano’s are also committed to their community and the many fans of their wines who travel to Healdsburg looking for an authentic, sensory experience where their favorite wines are made. Several buildings on the property date from the late 19th Century. Their tasting room is decorated with historical artifacts and vintage photos of the winery since its inception through the 20th Century. Special events are planned throughout the year for the neighbors and visitors, such as cellar-selection verticals and new vintage tastings for Wine Club members, guided vineyard tours and charity fundraisers.
The line of Foppiano Estate wines that Quintessential is bringing to trade outlets nationwide include five varietals -- Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pettie Sirah, Pinot Noir and Zinfandel – with suggested retail prices between $19.99 and $34.99.
