First Winery in Italy Adopts the Prooftag Anti-counterfeit System (Press Release)

Posted on April 18, 2013

Monteverro is truly an exclusive wine: only 17,000 bottles are produced of the Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot blend, a wine that is complex, elegant, and exhibits stunning aromatic intensity. And like all great wines, it is much sought-after in certain foreign markets, Germany in particular, but also in the UK, the United States and the Far East, so much so that some will go to imprudent lengths for a Bordeaux blend from Tuscany.

For this reason, starting with the 2010 vintage, all bottles of Monteverro will bear a newly-introduced security system to guarantee the authenticity of the product; patented by Prooftag, the Bubble Tag™ is being used for the first time on an Italian wine. The Bubble Tag™ is a seal that covers part of the capsule on the bottle; it cannot be removed without tearing the seal and changing its colour; further, it is produced by a chemical reaction on a translucent polymer film, and every constellation of its self-generated tiny bubbles is unique and unrepeatable. To ensure the authenticity of the bottle, the consumer can simply go to Monteverro’s website, type in the Bubble Tag™ code number, and check if the resulting image matches that on the bottle. The consumer can even use a Smartphone to read a QR code that is also on the seal.

Olympia Romba, sales and marketing manager of Monteverro: “To guarantee the consumer the authenticity and integrity of our wines is absolutely important. Thus, from the vintage 2010 the property has decided to introduce this seal of authenticity to all Monteverro bottles. The first wine in Italy to do so. With Bubble Tag™, those who love Monteverro will be completely sure of their bottle’s origin.” Franck Bourrières, Prooftag’s sales and marketing director, stated, “It is a great honour for us to gain the trust of Monteverro, the first winery in Italy to adopt our security system for protecting its world-class wines.” Franck Bourrières, Prooftag’s Sales and Marketing Director, stated, “It is a great honour for us to gain the trust of Monteverro, the first winery in Italy to adopt our security system for protecting its world-class wines.”

Monteverro was founded in 2003, by Georg Weber, who chose Cabalbio, in the extreme south of Tuscany’s Maremma area, as his second home. The estate comprises 50 hectares overall, with 25 planted to vineyard, in particular to Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Grenache, and Petit Verdot. The estate’s flagship wine is Monteverro, the wine that will bear the Bubble Tag™, starting with the 2010 vintage. Terre di Monteverro has the same varietal blend, but with the grapes.
