Winery Accounting Firm Offers "Financial Fluency" Coaching

Posted on June 27, 2012

Brotemarkle Davis & Co., LLP (BDCo), an accounting and advisory firm specializing in the wine and hospitality industries, today announced it is offering Financial Fluency Coaching, a suite of services designed to help individuals who work with financial information gain a better understanding and more effectively communicate it to others interested in achieving financial goals.

Since 1997, BDCo has specialized in training winery owners and their teams on topics ranging from communication skills to planning and accountability. While team training and group exercises have proven effective for sharing new concepts and strategic direction, Financial Fluency Coaching is designed for employees and owners seeking to understand and manage financial results at a deeper level.

“No one is born with an innate knowledge of accounting—although it can be argued that some of us caught on while we were still in diapers. Understanding it takes education and training, and making it interesting is an even bigger challenge,” said Geni Whitehouse, CPA.CITP, trained comedian, speaker, author of Even a Nerd Can be Heard, and Countess of Communication at BDCo. “Financial Fluency Coaching is designed to help people get over their fear of numbers and embrace their inner communicator.”

Coaching services, offered in a confidential setting with the option of using the company’s financial statements for a more tailored experience, tackle from multiple directions the challenges associated with communicating financial information. One on One Financial FluencyTM makes financial information understandable to employees charged with achieving financial results. Financial Fluency for Accountants™ helps winery accountants translate financial concepts for their non-financial co-workers. Financial Fluency for Teams™, available individually or in conjunction with the other services, teaches the language of business—accounting—to winery teams.

“As individuals progress in their careers and move into supervisory and management positions, they are expected not only to understand financial statements, accounting, and budgeting, but also to manage budgets and achieve top- or bottom-line results, often with no training,” said Craig Underhill, BDCo’s Emperor of Enlightenment and Financial Fluency coach. “As they progress, unfortunately, it becomes harder to ask questions or get clarification. The result is management teams attempting to achieve financial results they don’t thoroughly understand. Our financial coaching services are designed to keep that from happening.”

BDCo, which offers regular training and coaching on topics related to improving business results, looks to the people and processes behind the numbers for ways to improve the bottom line.
