Food and Beverage Processing and Production Specialist

Perennia Food and Agriculture Inc. offers on-farm production expertise, food safety and value-added product development services to the agricultural, seafood and food processing enterprises in Atlantic Canada. To assist in this effort, we are seeking a Processing and Production Specialist based in our Truro office to join our growing team of 40+ employees.
Food and Beverage Processing and Production Specialist
Reporting to the Manager of the Perennia Innovation Centre, the Food and Beverage Processing and Production Specialist will lead the bottling and filtration services for the wine and other beverage sector and support work in the pilot plant as directed. The specialist will perform manufacturing operations and processes to foods and beverages, perform packaging, operate machines manually or automatically, follow determined procedures, and support the goals of the company.

Specific responsibilities include:
•  Setting up and operating food processing equipment to food industry standards and coordinating pilot plant processing activities in concert with Perennia’s Innovation Centre staff and clients; this will require assessing the equipment needs and setting up the appropriate processing “line” for the product to be produced.
•  Operating the mobile bottling and filtration services for the wine and other beverage sectors during times of seasonal demand.
•  Responsible for the scheduling of maintenance of production equipment which includes planning, organizing, directing, controlling and educating other staff. Also, includes providing regular maintenance reports to the Manager of Perennia Innovation Centre
•  Ensuring processing and packaging output meets and/or exceeds specification and quality requirements
•  Working with the Manager of the Perennia Innovation Centre on recommendations for overall production position layouts, design and equipment utilization for the purpose of increasing capacity and efficiency.
•  Working with clients, tenants and other staff to confirm that industry-set sanitation standards are followed.
•  Working with food scientists, research associates, technicians, clients and management on pilot food processing projects from either inception to completion, or focus on specified component.
•  Purchasing, installing, operating and scheduling maintenance, and modifying a wide range of food and beverage processing and packaging equipment for pilot projects.
•  Developing safe work procedures for all equipment. Training staff and clients on pilot plant regulations, safe work procedures, equipment operation, and Standard Operating Procedures.
•  Sourcing new equipment and materials under funding or fiscal budgets. Commission the new equipment once on site and coordinate with private and government contractors to ensure all proper utilities are supplied. Perform maintenance of equipment once installed and modifications as required as per manufacturer guidelines.


•  5+ years or experience operating a food and beverage processing and packaging machines
•  An intermediate understanding of operational processes and cost control.
•  Strong working knowledge of machines and tools, including their design, uses, repair and maintenance.
•  A strong aptitude for equipment operation and troubleshooting.
•  Ability to read electrical schematics, blueprints and other technical diagrams.
•  Knowledge of appropriate materials, methods and the tools required in various assembly processes.
•  A high degree of leadership and the ability to work in a team environment.
•  Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
•  Ability to work independently and complete daily activities according to work schedule.
•  Ability to lift heavy objects, work and stand for long periods of time and perform strenuous physical labour.
•  Post-secondary Education or Certification required.
•  First Aid/CPR, WHMIS and forklift training required.
•  Transportation and Handling of Dangerous Goods certificate or willing to obtain.
•  Advanced Computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite required.
