Ruth Luevanos Announces Bid For CA-25
SIMI VALLEY, CA—City Councilwoman Ruth Luevanos on Monday morning announced her Congressional campaign for California’s 25th District. The swing seat, which includes portions of Los Angeles County, Ventura County, the San Fernando Valley, as well as the cities of Palmdale Santa Clarita, Lancaster, and Simi Valley, is currently represented by multi-millionaire, Trump-Republican Mike Garcia. A staunch supporter of progressive values and policies, Luevanos is the first Latina and the only current Democrat on the Simi Valley City Council, a position she was elected to with bipartisan support in 2018.
“For far too long our workers, our unions, and our communities have been under constant attack by political and corporate greed with little concern for the well-being of our families. I am running for Congress because the people of my community, of Simi Valley, and of CA-25 have asked me to continue standing up for their rights in the Halls of Congress,“ Ruth Luevanos said. “As a union leader and as a locally-elected official, I have been working to ensure that every person, regardless of race, gender, age, or background has a good paying job with a safe work environment and solid benefits.”
“I will work on Capitol Hill to pass Medicare For All so companies can no longer use healthcare as a bargaining tool in order to reduce the pay of our family members. I promise to work to put an end to the terrorization and trauma that ICE has caused our communities while working to fix a broken immigration system by expanding pathways to citizenship and ensuring that undocumented people are protected and given their civil rights,” Luevanos continued. “As an educator with two decades of experience in the classroom, I have seen the damage that a mismanaged Department of Education—like that of the previous Trump administration under Betsy Devos—can cause to our communities and to our youth. I do not believe in lost causes, only unrealized opportunities. When I am not offered a seat at the table, I bring my own chair. As a mother, as a teacher with a law degree, and as a daughter of immigrants, I am prepared to step foot into the Halls of Congress to not just ensure that the needs of California’s 25th District are met, but that everyone in our country is able to truly thrive.”
Ruth Luevanos is a mother, wife, teacher, union leader, activist, law school graduate, youth mentor, and the first Latina ever elected to the Simi Valley City Council. She is a tireless advocate for her students and for all young people and has dedicated her life to ensuring that every single student is able to receive a quality education regardless of their background. Unapologetically progressive, Ruth believes in well-funded and well-supported public education and healthcare, in tackling the interlinked problems of racial and environmental justice, and in making a just transition away from fossil fuels into a greener, more sustainable future.
