Highly Awarded Winemaker Steve Leveque Launches New Consulting Business

Posted on June 01, 2020

Napa, CA – June 1, 2020 - Born and raised in the Napa Valley, Steve Leveque has earned a reputation for expertly crafting wines that reflect the purity and identity of his vineyards. His list of winemaking work reads like a who’s who in the wine world: Mondavi, Chalk Hill, Opus One, HALL. “I am driven and competitive by nature, and while several of my wines have received perfect scores, I know they are not perfect wines,” Steve says. “Having a desire to learn and remain humble is the only way to better my abilities as a winemaker.”

Steve has earned three 100-Point scores from Wine Advocate, two 100-Point scores from Jeb Dunnuck and the #2 Wine in the World from Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of 2011. Over 80 of Steve’s wines have been rated 95-Points or more from major wine publications.

His latest venture, Leveque Wine Consulting, decidedly moves the goal posts for wine quality in every strata of the wine community. Steve’s vision offers unprecedented change for those who have the desire to embrace it. “My passion for wine, or more to the point, my passion for making exceptional wine, has been said to be contagious,” Steve admits. “I want to work with like-minded people, those who want to excel. My mantra is no shortcuts, no excuses.”

Steve is not only a winemaker, but also a viticulturist, spending significant time working in concert with vineyard managers and winemaking teams to produce exceptional grapes at an unparalleled level of quality. “Fundamental to making great wine is building relationships with growers, vintners and industry professionals, relationships that are both respectful and mutually advantageous,” Steve says. Steve also implements environmental sustainability with all his winemaking efforts.

Steve honed his winemaking techniques during his 11-year tenure as winemaker at Robert Mondavi Winery. “Robert Mondavi liked to preach, and people listened. One of his great messages was that wine is integral to a civilized society, always has been. And, making fine wine is an art,” Steve says. But Steve has also gleaned cutting-edge ideas from leading viticultural research and visionary collaborators including prominent wine consultant Michel Rolland. Steve went on to work as executive vice president and winemaker of Chalk Hill Estate Winery in Sonoma where he handcrafted an award-winning portfolio from small-lot Bordeaux varietals and Chardonnay. Under Steve’s direction over 200 of his wines have been rated 90-Points and above for HALL, WALT and BACA.
