Nova Cadamatre First Woman Winemaker in United States to Earn Master of Wine Title

Posted on September 11, 2017

September 8, 2017, Nova Cadamatre MW -- Nova Cadamatre has earned the title of Master of Wine, the first female winemaker in the US to have achieved this prestigious title while being only one of four American winemakers to have done so. “It is exciting to be able to shatter this ceiling. It really takes a change of mindset to pass the three sections and a humility to admit that there are many mysteries in the world of wine that we have yet to encounter.”

Cadamatre is Director of Winemaking for Canandaigua Winery while this year launching her own-label Trestle Thirty One with a 2015 Finger Lakes Riesling. She resides in New York’s Finger Lakes region with her husband, Brian, and their son, Nathaniel.

“I am so thrilled to achieve this goal! I hope my perseverance through the program serves as inspiration for others and allows me to assist current and future students who are reaching for the same dream."

Cadamatre’s research paper focused on best practices for practical barrel sanitation and explored the financial and environmental impacts of each treatment in addition to microbial effectiveness.

Named to Wine Enthusiast’s ‘Top 40 Under 40’ list in 2014, Cadamatre has numerous 90+ scored wines from both California and New York given by various media outlets. On August 29, 2017 she competed with 48 winemakers from 18 countries at China’s Ningxia Winemaker Challenge and was awarded a silver medal receiving a ?20,000 prize for her 2015 vintage Cabernet sauvignon made at Ningxia province’s Chateau Lansai.

Cadamatre began her wine career after moving to New York with the goal of pursuing horticulture. As one of the first graduates of Cornell’s Viticulture and Enology program in 2006, she relocated to California to assume several winemaking roles with iconic wineries including Beringer, Chateau St. Jean, Chateau Souverain, and most recently at Robert Mondavi Winery where she was its red winemaker focusing on Cabernet sauvignon from the iconic To Kalon Vineyard. Nova is a WSET alumni, blogger, wine writer, and is active on social media.
