Josh Rubin Appointed Director of Vineyards For Santa Barbara County's Dierberg & Star Lane Wineries

Posted on November 11, 2015

Santa Barbara, CA – Josh Rubin has been appointed Director of Vineyards for two of Santa Barbara County’s more popular wine producers, Star Lane Vineyard and Dierberg Vineyard, both owned by the Dierberg Family.

Mr. Rubin will oversee wine growing at all three vineyard estates, located within three of the main AVAs of Santa Barbara County. Dierberg Vineyards produces site-driven Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from its estate vineyards in Sta. Rita Hills and Santa Maria. Star Lane Vineyard is located in the Happy Canyon sub-appellation, where the focus is on producing Bordeaux-variety-based wines of depth and structure.

Josh completed his B.S. in Integrative Biology at University of California, Berkeley and received a masters in Viticulture and Enology from U.C. Davis. In previous roles with Luis Vuitton Moet Hennessey, E&J Gallo Winery and Joel Gott Wines, he guided viticulture and wine growing in premium regions throughout CA, OR and WA state.

Mr. Rubin prides himself on wine-centric farming, leveraging his early cellar experiences to gain perspective on how to precisely farm for flavors in the vineyard. A true believer in the power of terroir, he is particularly interested in how site and viticulture practices combine to produce unique, site-specific qualities in wine grapes.

“We are thrilled to bring someone of Josh’s technical expertise on board to continue to invest in our long term vision to become a quality oriented leader in wine grape cultivation,” noted Managing Director and Winemaker Tyler Thomas.

With wisdom from patience, a 250 year plan, and the certainty of passion, the Dierbergs planted Star Lane Vineyard with Bordeaux varietals. The family subsequently added two cool climate vineyards represented by the DIERBERG wines; creating a collection of superb estates within three distinct AVAs of Santa Barbara County’s winegrowing region.

“The Dierberg family have cultivated a wonderful array of sites,” Mr. Rubin noted, “loaded with diversity and opportunity. I am thrilled to be a part of the Dierberg vision that seeks to capture the essence of these incredible Santa Barbara vineyards in world class wines.”
