Ariel Lacayo Joins Bronx Restaurant Babalu

Posted on July 05, 2012

Popular Bronx eatery Babalu announced that industry veteran Ariel Lacayo has joined the restaurant as its new general manager and consultant.

This latest position reunites Lacayo with Babalu’s Executive Chef, Celebrity Chef Alex Garcia, who first worked alongside Lacayo in the 1990s at the highly-rated Patria. “It is an honor to have the chance to work with Chef Garcia again. He is such a creative chef and a grand presence in the kitchen that he inspires me in my position at the front of the house,” said Lacayo, who also consulted on Chef Garcia’s first New York City restaurant, Erizo. “For both of us, our hearts are in the food and in the service.”

An award-winning Court of Master Sommelier, Lacayo is also revamping Babalu’s wine list to create “the perfect complement to Chef Garcia’s cooking,” he said. “I know his food like the back of my hand.”

The owner of AL Restaurant Consulting, Lacayo has been consulting with the best restaurants in New York City for the past 10 years and has been a fixture of the dining scene for decades, working in such celebrated restaurants as Le Madri, Cocco Pazzo, Il Molino, and Sapore di Mare. A native of Nicaragua and the son of some of his country’s most successful restaurateurs, Lacayo has a deep love for Latino cuisine that drew him to Babalu.

“Babalu has a great mix of food, service and ambiance and I look forward to not only strengthening each of these elements but bringing them together in a way that will make Babalu the best Latino restaurant in all of New York City,” said Lacayo.”From day one, I felt an incredible connection with ownership and they were very positive about my vision for the restaurant.”

Babalu is the Bronx's indoor-outdoor destination for the excitement, feel and taste of old-world Latin America—with a modern twist. Located at 3233 East Tremont Ave (Between Puritan Ave and Waterbury Ave), Babalu is open for lunch from 11:30am to 3pm Monday through Friday, brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 3pm, and dinner from 5pm to 11pm Monday through Sunday. The restaurant also opens as a lounge from 11pm to 3am on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Babalu is currently accepting reservations by phone at 718.824.8400 or online at
