Reports from human resources managers and data from Winejobs.com describe a competitive market for direct-to-consumer staff and production workers as the industry continues to wrestle with ongoing disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Recruiting for higher-level positions, however, appears to be mostly unaffected as the near-universal acceptance of online meetings continues to make the hiring process quicker and easier for all those involved.

Los Angeles will require most people to provide proof of full coronavirus vaccination to enter a range of indoor businesses, including restaurants, gyms, museums, movie theaters and salons, in one of the nation's strictest vaccine rules. It will take effect on Nov. 4, which city officials have said should give the city and businesses enough time to figure out how the rule should be enforced.

With more time to make arrangements, owners are making expensive bets on what diners want when temps go down. Some of them are using the money to speed up service, add decor and invest in higher-quality permanent setups. The elaborate plans are a risk given all of the issues in the food-service industry, from supply shortages to the ability to find workers. But owners believe the creative setups will be enough to entice more diners out of their homes and mark a step forward from a year ago.

Gov. Tom Wolf on Tuesday announced that the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board had approved grants totaling $925,319 for seven beer projects, including a $498,000 grant for Harrisburg-based GK Visual to make another 12 episodes of the web series "Poured in PA." The grant also allows the production company to make 1- to 2-minute videos for up to 400 Pennsylvania breweries that can be used to promote them.

The National Interagency Fire Center's monthly report shows that much of Northern California has "above-normal significant fire potential" for fires through November. The fire center specifically references in its report the Coast Ranges from the Bay Area to Ukiah as an area at risk. Its outlook is mostly attributed to the ongoing drought that has engulfed most of California and left dry vegetation across the state, including in Sonoma County.
