Glass bottles are the largest source of the wine industry's carbon footprint. Researchers have known for at least a decade that the single largest portion of the carbon footprint of a bottle of wine comes from the energy used to manufacture that bottle, transport it to the winery to be filled and then distribute it around the globe for consumption. Naked Wines, which sells to its 300,000 customer base via a subscription model, said its advertising costs more than doubled to 42.3 million pounds, or about 12% of total sales, for the year ended March 29, up from 19.8 million pounds a year earlier as it chased new customers in the U.S. and UK.

In February 2020, a Missouri jury awarded $265 million in damages caused by dicamba drift to one peach orchard. While the award was eventually reduced to $75 million, Bayer-Monsanto struck a $400 million settlement to settle other suits filed by angry farmers. But the agreement does not cover the Texas grape growers, who saw their highly productive vineyards wither and, in some cases, die as a result of the dicamba-resistant seed system's use on over two million surrounding acres of cotton.
