The University of California, Davis Office of Research's Innovation Access unit informed the California Department of Food and Agricultureof the official release of five new Pierce's Disease (PD) resistant grapevine varieties developed in the breeding program of UCD viticulture professor and grape breeder Dr. Andy Walker. The five releases include three red wine grape selections and two white wine grape selections that have repeatedly shown strong resistance to PD in greenhouse and field trials, and have shown high fruit quality and high wine quality across several vintages and in wine tastings. These five selections are the results of a multi-year research and breeding project largely funded through the CDFA Pierce's Disease and Glassy-Winged Sharpshooter (GWSS) Board

California winegrape growers will vote this spring on extending the Pierce's Disease and Glassy-Winged Sharpshooter (PD/GWSS) Assessment for another fve years to March 2026. The assessment funds research to fnd solutions to PD, GWSS, and additional designated pests and diseases of winegrapes. The last time growers voted, over 80 percent favored continuing the winegrape assessment. "When growers decided 20 years ago to fund research to protect their industry, it opened the door to a grower-government partnership that is paying dividends today," said Karen Ross, Secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA). "By sharing responsibility and resources, this partnership effectively addresses the pest and disease challenges facing California's winegrape growers."

Simonit is a co-founder of the Italian pruning consultation firm Simonit & Sirch, which employs master pruners in its consultation work with wineries around the world, including in Napa. Vintners of wines at the higher and lower end in past business cycles have employed multiple avenues toward the rebalancing supply with demand. Those include introducing new wines or secondary labels and selling wine in bulk at a discount to be blended into lower-priced wines. Other methods of moving inventory quickly during times of excess supply have included selling bottled wine as labelless "shiners" to be marketed under in a closeout venue and "flash" sale websites.
