On July 8, 2019 more than 200 beverage professionals gathered under sunny skies at Willamette Valley Vineyards in Turner, Oregon for the first annual "Women in Wine: Fermenting Change in Oregon." Powerhouse speakers like Meg Crofton, former president of Disney Parks and Resorts, touched upon the importance of following one's 'inner compass' to guide one's life path. DRY Soda CEO Sharelle Klaus and Philana Bouvier, VP of new business development at Young's Market Company, took on the topic of 'Empowering Female Leaders,' while bestselling author Cheryl Strayed dove deeply into 'Risk Taking and Challenging Yourself.'

White began his career in agronomy and joined ISU's extension program in 1994. According to White, one of the most important meetings he attended as central Iowa's crop specialist took place at Summerset Winery in Indianola, IA in February 2000. At that time, Iowa had 13 wineries, two of which grew some grapes. According to White, "125 growers and winemakers showed up after 8" of snow. There were doctors, lawyers, other high-income people. I could tell than many had some background in grapes and wine." After that meeting, White went to ISU's agronomy department and asked if someone could put on grape and wine meetings. Monthly meetings began to take place at Summerset Winery with up to 100 people attending.

Speaking recently to the media on a trip to the Finger Lakes wine region, Senator Chuck Schumer of New York said the Federal Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB), "…is leaving New York's wine industry hanging on the vine, with outdated rules and restrictions stopping it from reaching its potential…As canned wine continues to become more and more popular, there's just no good reason why wine producers shouldn't be able to capitalize and sell their products in the most popular-sized cans, especially when studies have shown that lifting these unnecessary restrictions would lead to even further economic growth."

The property in question is Cole Ranch, which consists of about 150 acres (60 hectares) in Mendocino County. There are 55 acres of grapes planted, and water rights for the neighboring property. It's a great place to grow cool-climate wine grapes, as proven by Esterlina Winery, which made fine Riesling and Pinot Noir there a decade ago.

In mid-June, 18 judges met in Paso Robles and blind-tasted 803 wines from 165 wineries in the 17th annual Central Coast Wine Competition. The competition includes 10 coastal counties from Alameda to Ventura. Best of Show went to Solis Winery's 2018 Fiano from Santa Clara Valley. It also scored a Double Gold Medal (all judges in agreement) and the Best of Class award (Other White Wine category) and the overall Best White Wine. This is the second year in a row that a white wine has won the Best of Show award. In 2018, Alara Cellars' Grenache Blanc took home the coveted award.

Today, one gold standard of an oak-aged wine is Garrus, from Chateau d'Esclans. The wine is made from a blend of primarily Grenache, Vermentino, and Syrah grapes grown on the estate, harvested from vines over 80 years of age. Roughly 90% of the wine is made from free-run juice, and the wine is barrel-fermented in both new and two-year-old French demi-muids.
