University of California, Davis (UCD) winemaker Charles "Chik" Brenneman will retire from his position at the UCD Teaching and Research Winery March 5 to pursue other winemaking opportunities and to have more time for personal interests. Brenneman became an integral team member to help plan, build and operate the new, state-of-the-art LEED Platinum Teaching and Research Winery that opened in 2010 at the new Robert Mondavi Institute, and the adjacent Jackson Sustainable Winery Building that opened soon after.

A statement from the OIO last week said the purchase included about 70ha of freehold land and about 110ha of leasehold land at the Bannockburn vineyard. Mt. Difficulty is a medium-sized vineyard known for its Mt. Difficulty and Roaring Meg labels, and particularly its Pinot Noir and Riesling, produced by winemaker Matt Dicey.

Studies conducted by the Wine Business Institute at Sonoma State University found less than half of winery employees were familiar with any kind of disaster preparedness plan. Subsequent in-depth interviews at Napa and Sonoma county wineries revealed that the wine industry faces some unique challenges. New York City-based City Winery wants to create a winery and vineyard on the 21.46 acre property on the Wallkill River at the end of Factory Street. The proposal, which will be the subject of a Planning Board public hearing later this month, also would include a restaurant and tasting room, a 14-room boutique hotel and an outdoor event space with a stage that could accommodate up to 250 people for everything from concerts to weddings.

February 18th is National Drink Wine Day, which is a day each year that celebrates the love and health benefits associated with wine. According to the consulting group BW 166, wine sales in the U.S. topped $72.2 billion in 2018, which was nearly a 5 percent increase over the prior year. Both Pennsylvania and the nation as a whole have seen major shifts in drinking habits over the past 40 years. In 1977, Americans drank an average of 2.6 gallons of ethanol (converted based on the type of drink). In 2016, that figure was 2.35, a 9.6 percent drop. But the major drop was in beer consumption, which peaked nationally in 1986 at 1.35 and has been on a downward trend ever since, now at about 1.31, according to data from the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.
