A Malibu winery and multiple homeowners in that city are suing Southern California Edison Co., blaming the utility for their property losses from the Woolsey fire. The Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit, filed Tuesday, seeks unspecified damages on allegations of negligence, inverse condemnation, nuisance, premises liability and violations of the Public Utilities and Health & Safety codes. Digital wine sales account for around 4% of the total off-trade wine volumes in western Europe, according to Rabobank, with more than 360 million litres sold over 2017. This stands in contrast to Europe's overall wine consumption. Between 2010 and 2017, total wine consumption in western Europe declined by around 5%, while the total volume of wine sold through e-commerce has risen by 66%.

Nine sparkling wine producers in Spain's Penedés region are to quit the Cava denomination and bottle under a new, quality-focused label called Corpinnat. The nine producers account for only 1% of Cava production, but 30% of Gran Reserva Cava production and six out of the 13 Parajes Calificados - Cava's new premium classification.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue today announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has awarded $200 million to 57 organizations through the Agricultural Trade Promotion Program (ATP) to help U.S. farmers and ranchers identify and access new export markets. The ATP is one of three USDA programs created to mitigate the effects of unjustified trade retaliation against U.S. farmers and exporters. USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) accepted ATP applications between September 4 and November 2 - totaling nearly $600 million - from U.S. trade associations, cooperatives, and other industry-affiliated organizations. USDA has released a list of the ATP funding recipients.

In Washington's dry climate, split berries tend to quickly dehydrate. That means growers may mistake splitting as shriveling. "It just looks like a raisin instead of a wine grape," Chang said. That can impact yield, and splits can also encourage pathogens such as botrytis or sour rot, especially in compact-cluster cultivars. His research includes measuring splitting resistance in Merlot, Syrah, Zinfandel and Concord grapes; understanding the physiology of splitting; and looking at the role of water stress in the incidence of splitting in a Concord vineyard.

A record $3bn of wine was shipped directly from US wineries to consumers in 2018, but the pace of growth has slowed, according to a new report. New figures show the value of direct-to-consumer (DTC) shipments for the year rose by 11.6% to a record $3bn, said a report by Sovos and Wines Vines Analytics. That means the market has doubled in value since 2012.

The UK and Chile have signed a deal to ensure preferential trading after Brexit, in a move that the wine trade hopes will preserve imports of Chilean wines. CA Grand Crus has put two of its Bordeaux estates up for sale - Château Blaignan (Médoc) and Château La Tour de Mons (Margaux). The move would allow CA Grands Crus, a subsidiary of Crédit Agricole which owns and operates several vineyards in the Bordeaux and Burgundy regions, to focus on Château Grand Puy Ducasse, Château Meyney (Saint-Estèphe) and Château de Santenay (Burgundy), said the parent company.

DESPITE a hot and dry year, Small Forest Wines has still managed to produce a high-quality and quantity of crops, according to owner Atsuko Radcliffe.
