To date, the project has identified and tested target proteins that could be used to block the vector transmission of the Xf bacterium from plant to plant. Transgenic grapevine materials have been developed with transmission blocking proteins and peptides for use in lab and greenhouse experiments, and will ultimately be tested in field trials.

The construction of a 22,000-square-foot winery and tasting room south of Walla Walla by Bodegas Valdemar S.A. of Rioja is changing that. Valdemar expects to spend up to $18 million on winery and vineyard development over the next five years, the first time a vintner from Europe has set up a new winery in the state independent of local partners.

The owner and a vice president of Napa Valley's Copper Cane winery flew to Portland to meet Wednesday with the Oregon Liquor Control Commission Executive Director Steven Marks. The commission earlier found Copper Cane had committed seven violations with labeling and that it wants to revoke its ability to sell within Oregon.

The European Union is considering severely limiting the use of copper sulfate to fight mildew in vineyards; organic farmers argue fungus will run rampant without it. Vintners say that without effective alternatives to copper, crop loss in damp years will make organic vineyards economically unsustainable, forcing them to turn to synthetic chemicals or bankruptcy. But as the E.U. moves toward a vote on whether or not to reauthorize the use of copper compounds, leading winemakers argue that Europe's current approach to organic farming is too simplistic, and advocate a more nuanced strategy.

David Cutter has been appointed inaugural chief sustainability officer (CSO), in addition to his role as president of global supply and procurement. He will be joined by Kate Gibson, who will be leaving her role as vice president, global corporate citizenship, InterContinental Hotels Group, to take up the newly created role of director of Diageo in society.

The proposed policy would set a deadline of March 29, 2019, at 2:00pm, for landowners to apply for a permit to voluntarily remedy existing use permit violations on their properties. Meeting the deadline, with some exceptions, would avoid the imposition of a new policy that landowners come into compliance with existing entitlements immediately, and do so for one year before a use permit modification to remedy any violation would be considered.

Marriott said that there was a breach of its database in September, which had guest information related to reservations at Starwood properties on or before Sept. 10. The company said Friday that credit card numbers and expiration dates of some guests may have been taken. For about 327 million people, the information exposed includes some combination of name, mailing address, phone number, email address, passport number, Starwood Preferred Guest account information, date of birth, gender, arrival and departure information, reservation date and communication preferences.

The U.S. groundwater supply is smaller than originally thought, according to a new research study that includes a University of Arizona hydrologist. The study provides important insights into the depths of underground fresh and brackish water in some of the most prominent sedimentary basins across the U.S. The research by scientists from the University of Saskatchewan, the UA and the University of California, Santa Barbara was published Nov. 14 in Environmental Research Letters.

Consumer spending rose a sharp 0.6 percent last month, the Commerce Department reported Thursday. It was the biggest increase since a similar gain in March and was three times faster than the 0.2 percent September performance. Incomes, which provide the fuel for spending, were up 0.5 percent in October, a significant pickup from a 0.2 percent September gain.

MillerCoors and Pabst Brewing Co. settled a lawsuit Wednesday in which the hipster's brand of choice claimed the bigger brewer lied about its ability to continue brewing Pabst's beers to put that company out of business. The agreement between MillerCoors and Pabst expires in 2020 but provides for two possible five-year extensions. The companies disagreed on how the extensions were to be negotiated: MillerCoors argued it had sole discretion to determine whether it can continue brewing for Pabst, whereas Pabst said the companies must work "in good faith" to find a solution if Pabst wanted to extend the agreement but MillerCoors lacked capacity.
