The two blazes, jointly known as the Mendocino Complex fires, grew Sunday by nearly 38,000 acres to encompass 267,000 acres, according to Cal Fire. That ranks them as the fourth largest wildfire in state history.

Known as the Mendocino Complex fires, they currently rank as the sixth-largest conflagrations ever in California, just behind the Zaca fire that burned in Santa Barbara County in 2007. The Ranch and River fires have destroyed 104 structures, including 55 homes, and continue to threaten 15,300 more, Cal Fire reported.

Researchers at France's Institute of Agronomical Research (INRA) recently received permission to grow four grape varieties that are genetically resistant to mildew rot, eliminating much of the need for pesticides. Where a winery typically needs to spray pesticides about 15 times a year, the INRA varieties may only need one or two.

The Board of Supervisors also is set to discuss opening the door to recreational cannabis sales in the county's unincorporated areas, where dispensaries currently can only sell medical marijuana. But the policy debate about outdoor growing operations will likely prove most contentious, as critics lobby for tighter restrictions and farmers push for more flexibility. Under a plan proposed by county staff, smaller pot farms would be subject to a more thorough permitting process than larger ones, while residents could seek special zoning designations to ban cultivation in their neighborhoods.

The concept, known as securitization, is embodied in a bill by an East Bay assemblyman and has full-throated backing from the utility, which has recently spent nearly $1.7 million lobbying state officials. Assembly Bill 33 is expressly designed to facilitate prompt settlement of damage claims from the 2017 fires, according to its supporters. It would allow PG&E to sell state-authorized bonds to finance billions of dollars in wildfire damages, with the utility's millions of customers paying for them through charges on their power bills.

AshBritt Environmental has agreed to donate $450,000 in cash for the rebuilding of the perimeter walls along Hopper Avenue, the company and others involved in the rebuild effort announced Friday.
