The Top 100 Vineyard Owners in Napa Valley (#3 & #4)
At 45,000 acres of vines, Napa Valley is essentially planted out, creating a highly competitive environment for land and grapes. As a result, vineyard prices continue to rise but not enough to slow interest in purchasing these properties, and the news of vineyard sales breaks unabated. Keeping track of who owns what in the Napa Valley is not so simple, but Wine Business Monthly has pulled together a list of the top 100 vineyard owners in the region and published it in our December 2017 issue.
To preview the full article coming out this Friday, we will be counting down the Top Vineyard Owners, releasing two each day. Today we are releasing #3 & #4. To see #5 & #6, click here. To see #7 and #8, click here. To see #9 and #10, click here.
4. Constellation Brands: 1,330* acres
Constellation Brands, a Fortune 500 company based in Victor, N.Y., did not disclose how many planted acres it owns in Napa County. The estimates used in the database are public records. However, a company representative stated this summer the company owns or leases about 20,000 acres of land and vineyards, “either fully bearing or under development, primarily in the U.S., New Zealand and Italy” for its “higher-end” wines. Constellation farms about 1,330 planted vineyard acres, according to the Napa County Agricultural Commissioner, and county records indicate Constellation owns about 465 of them.
3. Bayview/Laird Family: 1,811 acres
The Laird family members operate a winery, custom crush, bottling and trucking in Napa County. One of its divisions, Bayview Vineyards, farms 34 vineyards throughout Napa County, including Maple Lane Ranch, Red Hen Ranch and Honey Road Ranch, according to its website. Laird Wine services also includes a bulk wine storage and long-term storage for multiple clients, including C. Mondavi & Sons. The family owns about 1,811 planted acres, according to the Napa County Agricultural Commissioner. The family purchaed 41 acres in Oak Knoll from Terlato in September.
Note: The list of top vineyard owners by planted acreage was compiled through public records, queries to vineyard owners and through our proprietary database. The top 100 vineyard owners account for roughly 28,000 of Napa’s planted acres while approximately 1,300 growers in Napa Valley farm 1 acre of grapes or more, according to the Napa Valley Grapegrowers. (An asterisk denotes leased lands are included in the total, as they are long-term leases.)
